HAI Europe Association Essay Writing Competition 2012
Health Action International (HAI) Europe is sponsoring an essay contest open to European nationals or others who are permanently residing in Europe and who are in, or have completed, full time education in the last eight years. The essay should focus on one of the principal areas of HAI Europe’s policy work: Rational use of medicines, Access to essential medicines, and Democratisation of medicines policy .
Winning entries will be selected by a panel of referees and announced at the end of June. There will be (limited) funding available to cover the costs (travel, hotel, entry visa) for the winner to attend the autumn Annual General Meeting of the HAI Europe Association so that she/he can make a short 15-minute Power Point presentation based on their essay at the meeting and be present over the course of the two-day meeting (exact date and location to be determined). Winning essays will also be posted on the HAI website.
Essays must be written in English, double-spaced, and be between 1500 and 2000 words excluding titles and references.
The deadline for receipt of the essays is 09.00 hrs CET Friday 1 June 2012.

2011 HAI Europe Association Essay Writing Competition
Congratulations to the winner of the HAI Europe Association Essay Writing Competition competition 2011, Cassie Dormond.
Cassie is working towards a Master’s in Global Social Policy from the Department of Sociological Studies at the University of Sheffield, in England. Her dissertation is an examination of the international political economy of tuberculosis, and focuses specifically on access to appropriate medicines and the power of the pharmaceutical industry. Her essay can be read here.

2010 HAI Europe Association Essay Writing Competition
We are pleased to announce that Ms Fiona Rae has been selected as the winner of the HAI Europe Association Essay Writing Competition 2010. Her winning essay can be read here.
This competition was open to all those resident in the European region who are in, or have completed, full time education in the last eight years. Contestants were invited to write a 1500-2000 word essay on one of the three pillars of HAI work.
Ms Rae is a medical student at the University of Edinburgh and came to the HAI Europe Association Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Amsterdam in October to present her essay “Intellectual Property Rights versus the Right to Access Essential Medicines: Why do patents still pose a threat to drug access after the Doha Declaration ?”. The presentation she gave at the AGM can be accessed here.
The entries received were of high quality but the contest judges were especially impressed by the depth and scope of Ms Rae’s analysis.
